Prizes

The Williams Prize

The George Guion Williams Prize for Excellence in Creative Writing by an Undergraduate Student at Rice is awarded annually for prose and poetry. Judged by well-known authors and poets, the Wiliams Prize honors the authors of the best fiction pieces and the best poems published in R2: The Rice Review each year. Two prizes, along with $500 for first place and $250 for second place, are awarded for each category.

George Williams attended Rice and later returned to teach English literature and creative writing at Rice for 40 years. In 1992, in honor of Williams’ 90th birthday, his friends and former students endowed the prize.

Creative Nonfiction Prize

The Creative Nonfiction Prize is awarded annually to two undergraduate students for creative nonfiction. The prizes, along with $500 for first place and $250 for second place, honor the authors of the best creative nonfiction pieces published in R2: The Rice Review each year.

Cover Art Prize

The Cover Art Prize is awarded to the undergraduate artist whose piece is chosen as the cover of R2: The Rice Review each year. Along with the glory of having his or her work immortalized on our cover, and possibly on a t-shirt, the winner will receive $250.
